Acceptable use policy
Last updated 24.10.2026
This page is new and has not been reviewed yet. If anything here is unclear, write to hey@volt.cards.
This policy sets out what you may and may not do with VoltCards, and what happens when a card breaks the rules. It is part of our Terms and conditions, so agreeing to those means agreeing to this too.
VoltCards lets anyone make a public card and put any link on it. Most people use that to share who they are. This policy is about the few who would use it to deceive or harm the people who open their card.
1. Your card
Everything on your card, including its photo, banner, name, title, company, links and the questions on its contact form, must not:
- defraud or deceive anyone, including phishing, scams, fake payment or sign-in pages, and fake prizes or investment offers;
- impersonate a person, a company or a brand, or suggest a connection with one that does not exist;
- link to malware, or to anything built to harm a visitor's device or account;
- be illegal, or promote something illegal;
- be hateful, harassing, threatening, sexually explicit or violent;
- infringe anyone's copyright, trademark, privacy or other rights;
- carry another person's personal details without their permission.
A link on your card is part of your card. If the page it leads to breaks these rules, your card does too, even if the page belongs to someone else.
2. Your username
Your username is your card's address. It must not impersonate anyone, use a name or brand you have no right to, or be offensive. We may refuse such a username or take it back, as section 3.2 of the Terms and conditions says.
3. Other people's details
VoltCards helps you collect contact details: through your card's contact form, the event kiosk, scanning business cards, and saving other people's cards. You must not:
- collect details from people without telling them who you are, or without a lawful reason;
- send people messages they did not ask for in bulk, using details from VoltCards;
- scan business cards that were not given to you;
- use "Find details online" to research people you have no business reason to contact;
- sell or hand on details you collected, other than as the person who gave them would expect.
4. The service itself
You must not:
- copy cards or contact details in bulk from the service, other than your own through the API;
- try to get around a plan's limits, our rate limits or our security;
- try to sign in to an account that is not yours, or test the service for weaknesses without our written permission;
- send automated requests other than through the API with your own key;
- interfere with VoltCards, its servers or other people's use of it.
If you find a security problem, please tell us at hey@volt.cards rather than test it further.
5. Reporting a card
Anyone who opens a card can report it with Report this card at the foot of the card. You choose a reason (spam, scam or phishing, impersonation, offensive content, or something else), and you can add details and an email address. You do not need an account. The card's owner is never told who reported it.
You cannot report your own card. If you think someone is impersonating you, report their card, or write to hey@volt.cards.
6. What we do
Our team is notified of every report and reviews it. We may also act on a card we find ourselves. For each report, we either:
- close it without action, when we do not find that the card breaks this policy;
- hide the card, so that nobody who opens it sees it. The owner's account and their other cards keep working, and the owner cannot show the card again themselves;
- suspend the account, which hides every card on it and stops the owner signing in. We do this when the whole account is being used to break this policy, or when hiding one card would not be enough.
If you left an email address or were signed in when you reported, we tell you once whether we acted. We do not tell you what we did, and we do not name the owner.
Where the law requires it, we pass information about illegal content to the authorities.
7. If we acted on your card
If you think we made a mistake, write to hey@volt.cards from the address on your account and tell us why. We will look again. If we hid a card by mistake, we show it again, and if we suspended an account by mistake, we restore it.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as new kinds of misuse appear. The date at the top of this page shows when it last changed.
